The cheapest great idea in Vienna: standing places sold on the day, for the price of a coffee.
What it costs
Free from the pavement, and guided tours of the building are ticketed and run most days.
But the thing to know is the standing places (Stehplätze). They are sold shortly before the performance, from their own entrance, at a price that is a small fraction of a seat — and they put you inside one of the world’s great opera houses for an evening. You queue, you stand, and you can leave at the interval if you have had enough.
When to go
The season runs autumn to June; the house is dark for part of the summer, when tours are the only way in. For standing places, arrive well before the counter opens — the queue is the price you actually pay.
Getting there
Metro U1, U2 or U4 to Karlsplatz, then a two-minute walk, or any tram on the Ring.
If you only have an hour
By day, take the tour if one is running in your language. By evening, join the standing-place queue — an hour of queuing and a few euros puts you inside for the first act, and leaving at the interval is entirely normal.
What people get wrong
People assume opera in Vienna is for people who can afford opera in Vienna. The standing-place system exists precisely because it is not, and it has worked that way for a very long time. Dress is far less formal than the building suggests.
