Ticketed, and it covers the state rooms as well as the galleries — which makes it one of the better-value palace interiors in the centre.
The Albertina Modern, a separate site at Karlsplatz, is a separate ticket; combined tickets exist.
When to go
Open daily, with a late evening once or twice a week. Its blockbuster exhibitions draw real queues; the permanent rooms rarely do.
Getting there
Metro U1, U2 or U4 to Karlsplatz, or walk from Stephansplatz. The terrace outside, above the Opera, is free and gives a good view down the Ring.

If you only have an hour
Check what is hanging before you buy. If a headline exhibition is on, that is the hour; if not, the state rooms are included in the ticket and are the quiet pleasure of the place. The terrace outside is free either way.
What people get wrong
Its most famous holdings — Dürer’s Young Hare among them — are works on paper and are shown only occasionally, because light damages them permanently. Do not travel expecting to see a specific drawing; check what is actually on display.
