Vienna's collections are unusual in that they were assembled by one family over roughly six centuries and then split across several buildings when the monarchy ended. That is the single most useful thing to know before buying tickets: the Habsburg holdings are not in one place, and the building you want depends on what you actually came to see.
The Kunsthistorisches Museum and the Naturhistorisches Museum face each other across Maria-Theresien-Platz as deliberate twins, built to hold the imperial art and natural-history collections respectively. The Belvedere, a baroque palace on its own grounds, holds the Austrian painting collection including Klimt's best-known work. The MuseumsQuartier behind them is a later conversion of the imperial stables into a cluster of modern and contemporary museums.
Two practical warnings we will keep repeating in this section. First, check the closing day β several major Vienna museums close one day a week, and it is not the same day everywhere.
