One of the great picture galleries of Europe, in a building that is worth the ticket on its own.
What it costs
Ticketed, and the building is part of what you are buying — the staircase, the cupola and the café under the dome are as photographed as the paintings.
Its twin across the square, the Natural History Museum, is a separate ticket in a near-identical building. Combined tickets with other Vienna museums exist and are worth asking about if you are visiting several.
When to go
Closed one day a week outside high season — check before you plan a museum day around it. Late opening one evening a week is the quietest time to see the Bruegel room.
Getting there
Metro U2 to Museumsquartier or U3 to Volkstheater; the museum is on the square between them.
If you only have an hour
Go to the Bruegel room and stay there. It is the largest collection of his paintings anywhere and an hour in one room beats a forced march through forty. Have the coffee under the cupola on the way out.
What people get wrong
It holds the largest collection of Bruegel paintings in the world, which is the single reason many art visitors come to Vienna at all. If you have one hour, spend it in that room rather than trying to walk the whole building.
