A social housing block that became a sight — free from the street, and there is nothing to go inside.
What it costs
Free. It is a residential building and you look at it from the pavement.
There is no interior to visit, and that is the fact most visitors arrive without. People live here. The shopping village opposite is a separate commercial building put up to absorb the crowds, and the nearby Kunst Haus Wien is the ticketed museum of Hundertwasser’s work.

When to go
Any time. It is a five-minute stop rather than a destination, and it is best combined with the Kunst Haus or a walk along the Danube Canal.
Getting there
Tram 1 to Hetzgasse, or metro U3 to Landstraße and a walk.

If you only have an hour
Five minutes at the building, then walk to the Danube Canal three minutes away and follow it — the graffiti banks and the bars along there are a better hour than the shopping village opposite.
What people get wrong
It is often taken for an art installation. It is municipal housing, completed in 1985 and still lived in, built to Hundertwasser’s rule that no floor should be flat and no window should match its neighbour. Photograph the outside and let the residents get on with their day.
