Vienna’s best-known market: free to walk, priced for visitors at the front, and a genuine food market further in.
What it costs
Free to walk through. What it costs is what you buy, and where you buy it matters more here than at most markets.
The stalls nearest the Karlsplatz end are restaurants and visitor-priced delicatessens. Walk further out and it becomes a working produce market with ordinary prices. Ask the price before accepting a sample — the tasting-plate approach at the tourist end is a known way to run up a bill.

When to go
Closed on Sundays, like nearly everything in Vienna. On Saturdays the flea market at the far end is the busiest and best day of the week.
Getting there
Metro U1, U2 or U4 to Karlsplatz, or U4 to Kettenbrückengasse for the flea-market end.

If you only have an hour
Walk the whole length rather than stopping at the first stalls. Buy at the far end where the prices are ordinary, and if it is a Saturday, keep going into the flea market.
What people get wrong
It is often described as a food market. It is really three markets end to end — restaurants, delicatessens, then produce — and which one you are standing in decides what you pay. The name means “nibble market”.
