The Prater, the Wienerwald, the Danube and the drinking fountains. Roughly half the municipal area is green, which changes how summer works here more than visitors expect.

Roughly half of Vienna's municipal area is green β€” the city's own figure, and one we quote with the caveat that other methodologies measuring tree canopy, or the inner districts alone, return notably lower numbers. Even discounted, it changes how the city works, particularly in a hot summer.

The Prater is two things sharing a name. The Wurstelprater is the amusement park with the giant wheel; the far larger Grüner Prater behind it is open parkland and woodland running down towards the Danube. Visitors often see only the first and conclude the Prater is small.

The Donauinsel is an artificial island built as flood defence and used as a public swimming, cycling and festival ground. It is 21 km long and only 70–120 m wide, which is why it feels like a corridor rather than a park and why it absorbs an enormous number of people without feeling full.

The Wienerwald to the west is genuine forest inside and around the city limits, with working vineyards on its slopes; the Lobau to the east is floodplain within a national park.

Articles here cover the practical side: the drinking fountains in summer, what the city does in a heatwave, and which green space is actually reachable without a car.

This section is being written. The guide above is the section for now. New articles are published across the site about twice a week rather than a section being filled in a day, so this page grows steadily — it is worth looking in again. In the meantime the sixteen sight pages and the plans by trip length are finished, and they are the best place to start.
